The Asstrix is an independent punk band from Metro-Detroit. Originally a group of college friends that met at Lawrence Technological University in 2018, now pushing the limits of what can be considered music. The Asstrix sounds like nothing anyone has made before because the members only go into it trying to have a good time. The band does have a few rules though, you’re not allowed to play an instrument you already know how to play and each member is encouraged to play as many instruments as possible. That’s why you will never see members listed by a specific instrument. So far, core members include Hope, Fish, Randall, Powell, Jess, and Jeff. Recordings, arrangements, mixing, album art, registering songs, uploading music for digital streaming, and making physical CDs are all done by the band members themselves. The Asstrix has been making music for less than a year and is very excited about our upcoming releases over the next few months. We feel like we’re really starting to get a sense of what we’re trying to accomplish. Toeing the line between music and noise to create a unique auditory experience. And most importantly to have fun doing it.

• The Asstrix was formed in April 2022 in a hotel room in Southgate Michigan by founding members Hope McGee and Fish Capozzoli. The pair met in 2018 at freshman orientation at Lawrence Technological Institute.

• The goal was to have fun. It was never about other people

• Our first album “Fishy 9” - recorded in April 2022 and released May 4th, 2022-  was inspired by the Motion City Soundtrack quote “if you could live a million years in just a moment would it hit you even harder?” and the way we wanted to attempt to portray that feeling was by making 9 separate albums and layering and rerecording over them. We used a mix of acoustic, electric, vocals, and layering of 100s of free sound loops. In the end, we had Fishy #9 and my computer crashed at least 30 times throughout the process. There was some initial pushback on if what we had created could even be considered music. And that felt like we were going in the right direction. We originally went into it trying to make “bad music” but by the end of it, Fish looked at me and said, “I don’t think we made it bad enough, this kind of slaps”.

• Soon after, we released “Lonely in Michigan” on May 14th, 2022. The vocals were recorded the same week in the same hotel room as Fishy 9 while the windchimes were recorded at Rat King Tattoo. Lonely in MI is a solo album that takes the form of a love letter. Originally submitted to Spotify as “spoken word with music” but was not allowed into that genre. This delayed not only the release of Loney in Michigan but also of “Pro-Abortion”.

• 3rd Album “Pro-Abortion” recorded in May 2022 at Breathe Free Tattoo in Manhattan was originally meant to release May 31st, 2022 but was pushed back until July because it was not classified as Political Spoken Word with music and had to be resubmitted. Pro-Abortion is a solo album telling the story of when I got an abortion due to a medical issue and the impending upheaval of Roe v. Wade.

• 4th Album “Is Grime a Crime?” released June 3rd is yet another solo album that was recorded at Breathe Free Tattoo. It was an insight into how society has been ear trained to only appreciate clean melodies. I wanted to make a love letter to grunge and I’m not quite sure if it's there. I’d definitely like to give it another shot. My reasoning for finishing Is Grime a Crime and not taking longer to play with it, is simple. My computer crashed even more times than with Fishy 9 and I gave up. Which felt pretty grunge rock at the time.

• June 3rd 2022 we released our first single “Sonata No.1: The Teo I Adore”. Also, a solo piece that was recorded at Breathe Free Tattoo, this time dedicated to my cat Theo. This piece was recorded alone in my studio on a rainy day in Manhattan while watching a video of him snuggling in my lap.

• Next, come two solo EPs “The Way You Like it” and “The Whey You Don’t” both recorded in a hotel in Leeds, UK during Queen Elizabeths Platinum Jubilee. They were both released July 11th 2022. She passed away September 8th 2022.

• Our 5th full album - recorded in June and released August 21st - add in some more key members: Jeff, Powell, Jess, and Randall. All friends of Hope and Fish from Lawrence Tech. Some may even refer to them as the “Milk Bois” due to game nights being known for always having Milk and Cookies available. Simultaneously Amazing was the most physically taxing project the band has ever taken on. For starters, Hope was EXTREMELY jet lagged from being in the UK the week before and working that week. She also lost her phone twice, two tires, her cat escaped, and she left her wallet and had to get it the next time she came back to Michigan in August. But honestly what could be more Rock and Roll?

• 23 Skiddoo - recorded July 2022 and released August 22nd, 2022-  is a solo acapella single. As a trained singer, when I get sick I like to test my vocal range and the amount of breath I can hold to see if I’m back to 100% or if I need more rest. In July I got covid and was down for the count for a few weeks. But once I started to feel better and was finally back in the office for the first time I spent 4 hours recording 23 layers of trills, arranging them, making the album art, registering the song, and then submitting them for digital distribution. And since I was able to do all that I felt like I was ready to be back at work.

• 6th Full Album Sunshine was a solo album recorded sometime between 12am and 2am at Rat King Tattoo in August 2022 and released September 6th 2022. Sunshine was meant to be something between is Grime a Crime and Lonely in Michigan. Mixing the recording style of is Grime a Crime with the feel of Lonely in Michigan we were able to create a completely new sound.

• 7th Full Album Our Friend Josh - recorded August 2022 and released January 2023 - was our first attempt at an acoustic live album. We wanted it to feel like you were standing there with us experiencing what it's like to hang out with us for a few hours. It’s the first album that we introduce guest artists Morgan and Aubri. We decided to dedicate the album to our friend Josh “E.T.” The Alien, an inflatable alien that had lived in the safety and care of our band members for years.
